Cheryl Cowell

Board member

A long-term resident of Denham, Cr Cowell is a great asset to the Gascoyne region who brings to the Board a deep strategic knowledge and passion for tourism, the environment and conservation. Cheryl has worked with the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attraction in Shark Bay since 1995. As World Heritage Project Officer, Cheryl has been involved in all aspects of management of the Shark Bay World Heritage Property and conservation of the World Heritage values since 1999. She is also Executive Officer for the Shark Bay World Heritage Advisory Committee which provides advice to State and Commonwealth Environment Ministers on the conservation and protection of the values of the Property.

Cheryl was elected to the Shire of Shark Bay Council in October 2007 and has held the position of Shire President since October 2009. She also previously served as a member of the Commission’s Board from 2011 to 2016. Cheryl currently chairs the Commission’s Audit and Risk Subcommittee, the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) Gascoyne Zone committee, and is a member of the WALGA State Council.

Cheryl is a well respected leader and active member of the Shark Bay community. Cheryl held the position of secretary and was a volunteer ambulance officer with the Saint John Ambulance for 10 years. She is currently secretary and an active member of the Shark Bay Pistol Club.
