Kickstarters Gascoyne Dash, Carnarvon & Gascoyne Junction
The “Gassy Dash” as known by locals and competitors, is a desert race and is in memory of the late and local identity Neville Brandstater who tragically drowned in the Lyndon River in 1995. It is a motorsport that pits car against car and bike against bike with the quickest of each to determine who will be crowned ‘King of the River’. Watch a video of 2018’s event.
The race takes place between Carnarvon and Gascoyne Junction, Western Australia and is raced across some of the harshest terrains in Australia. The Dash refers to what previously was boats racing down the flooded Gascoyne River however the river rarely flows so bikes and cars replaced the boats.
A comparison has been made between the Dash and the Finke Desert Race. Both races are a true test of machine and competitor, both are races that promote the unique Australian outback. The Dash is a point to point race over a hugely varied landscape, a cross-country course extensively consisting of natural desert and outback terrain. In excess of 500km over two days the Dash is long and tough; it is an ultimate challenge.
