Regional Waste Initiative

As part of a whole of government push “toward zero waste”, legislated for in 2007 under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Bill, the Gascoyne Development Commission is facilitating a regional approach to improved waste management practices.

The Gascoyne Development Commission in conjunction with the shires of Carnarvon, Shark Bay, Upper Gascoyne and Exmouth, the Department of Environment and Conservation and the Ningaloo Sustainable Development Office is working toward improving waste management practice in the region.

The GDC is providing executive assistance to the regional steering committee and is negotiating the finances and managing the contracts for a series of studies. These studies will identify current practices and baseline data, consider how the region can ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’, calculate how much these measures will cost and outline how to implement them.

One of Australia’s leading waste management consultant teams, specialists in solutions for remote locations, is working closely with the steering committee come up with workable solutions.

It is expected the studies will be complete early in 2009 and priority recommendations will begin to be implemented soon after.
