Education Precinct Strategy Group
The Gascoyne region has fairly limited education services compared to most areas of Western Australia. For example, the Gascoyne is the only region in Western Australia without immediate access to university education.
Post compulsory education participation rates in the Gascoyne region are well below the State’s average according to the Department of Education and Training.
In light of this deficit, the GDC commissioned research into education in Carnarvon, the region’s centre, which to the release of the report entitled “An Education Precinct in Carnarvon: A community approach to the future”.
This report recommended the establishment of an education and training campus with co-located and integrated facilities.
An education campus would offer students and the broader community many benefits.
Opportunities to develop a broader range of skills and an ability to undertake study in all sectors locally.
- Provision of a number of education and training streams
- A greater variety of course options.
- A more adult environment for late adolescent students and raised educational horizons/aspirations for the younger students.
- Real opportunities for life-long learning in the local environment.
- Improved access to facilities such as libraries, workshops and ICT facilities.
Education, community and industry leaders, come together regularly to progress this goal. The GDC provides an executive officer to facilitate the Education Strategy Precinct Group.
